Why Joseph Myers?
![[UNSET] [UNSET]](http://scribblesessions.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/unset.jpg?w=194&h=300)
Joseph Myers, author of the books The Search to Belong and Organic Community, is a prefect addition to Scribble sessions. When I first heard Joe he blew my mind with his phenomenal knowledge and understanding of how people function in society. In a creative and engaging way Joe explains simple things like, how you can be in a conversation with somebody for ten minutes and feel like you have known them your entire life. Or how you can know someone for a really long time and still feel like they are a complete stranger. Joe will give you simple, practical tools for your small groups to help you connect your students to one another. It’s a great privilege to have Joe as a part of Scribble.
Why Bob Russell?

We are really excited to have Bob Russell speaking this year at Scribble Sessions. Over the course of 40 years, Bob lead a congregation of 53 members meeting in a basement to a church of 18,000. Southeast Christian Church is now the 6th largest church in America.
Those are the normal things that you would expect to read about the people who are speaking at your conference, but here is something that you wouldn’t expect to read…Bob Russell is not on Wikipedia. That may seem strange, especially when you can find Bill Hybels and Rick Warren on Wikipedia. It seems strange until you meet Bob. Bob is incredibly unassuming. He doesn’t come across as the kind of guy you would expect to build an 18,000 person church. That may seem like a knock, but it isn’t. He would even agree with that assessment. So who built Southeast? Bob gives every ounce of credit to God for building Southeast. I know other guys would say the same thing about their churches, but when Bob says something like that it carries weight because he has never elbowed his way into the national spotlight. Since retiring Bob has not been out sailing. Instead he has quietly been taking young ministers from all over the country under his wing to mentor and coach them towards effective ministry. Bob is one of the most important and underrated voices on effective ministry in America today and that is why we are so excited and honored to have Bob Russell as a part of Scribble Sessions.
Why Michael Novelli?

Have you ever been stumped by something? You know what I’m talking about, you’ve looked at it from every angle and despite all your best efforts you just cannot figure it out. You’ve been there, right? Then it happens, just when you are about to give up someone with fresh eyes walks up and offers a common sense solution that is so simple that it makes you want to slap yourself. That’s how I feel about Michael Novelli’s book Shaped by the story. For 10 years Michael was in the trenches of youth ministry engaged in the familiar struggle of making the ancient scriptures come alive to students who just are not that interested. Then, a missionary introduced him to a unique, ancient way to engage people with the Bible called storying. Storying is a sequential telling of Bible stories followed by a time of review and dialogue. The beauty of storying is that it takes us back to the root of the text- stories about God and us. We begin to see the power of the stories when we put ourselves in the sandals of the people in the text. After implementing this method with his students Michael began to see students connect with God and His word like never before. It’s awesome to see an entire group of students transformed because God has revealed a simple common sense idea. Michael is a really humble and engaging guy and I am really glad that he is a going to be a part of Scribble sessions. If you would like more information about Michael and his ministry check out his blog at www.echothestory.com.
Steve Argue vs. Bob Russell
Gather 8 of our leading youth ministry thinkers and doers, offer them each 30 minutes of rapid-fire stimulation, and the result? Unexpected connections. Extraordinary insights. Powerful inspiration.
Scribble really is a youth ministry conference like none other. The speakers who are involved are sooo different from one another and we find that to be an extraordinary blessing. For example, on one hand we have Steve Argue who is an important voice to upcoming youth leaders in the emergent movement in Michigan and on the other we have Bob Russell, one of the most respected Senior ministers in the Midwest who pioneered a church that grew from a small home to a congregation of 18,000. Both men love young people, both men approach the heart of youth ministers differently, and both men have different perspective and strategies about youth ministry.
This is what the whole day is about. 8 awesome leaders, 8 different perspectives, 8 different voices, and 8 different strategies to engage today’s young people…all in one day. Each one gets one half hour to communicate before we give them the heave-ho! This is a great challenge for these guys and they have embraced it whole heartedly. See you at Scribble!
What’s this SCRIBBLE thing all about?

Scribble in Louisville
I have been doing youth ministry for ten years now. Over the past ten years, I have been to plenty of the big youth ministry shows. I have seen the crowds, the lights, and I have heard the redneck jokes. All great stuff, but it’s a new day. Please let me explain why we are doing Scribble:
1. We are living in a recession and many churches are cutting back on their conference budgets. We want to offer a quality affordable one day experience for youth ministers.
2. Scribble is about Jesus and great ideas. Students are processing information at an alarming rate. Much of it is done through networking and a more concentrated focus on information. Look at Myspace vs. Facebook vs. Twitter. It’s getting smaller and faster not fatter and louder. Scribble is about deflating the four day conference and getting down to the nuts and bolts of key youth ministry ideas. Scribble will offer 8 great ideas from 8 great youth ministry minds in one day.
3. We have an unbelievable speaking lineup. We have been really blessed to have guys jump in who want to speak into the lives of youth ministers. They all come from different arenas of life and they may even disagree on certain issues but we know they all have something important to say and a deep passion to see students connect deeply to Jesus.
4. Louisville is a perfect location. It is less than three hours from Cincinnati, Nashville, and Indianapolis. Afterwards you can stop by 4th Street and have a look around, hang at Waterfront park, catch a Bats game, or check out the Louisville Slugger Museum.
5. Ultimately we love Jesus and want to serve the church. Over the years I have been honored to link arms with other guys whose blood, sweat, and tears go into youth ministry. It is a world few people understand. For one day, we don’t want to link arms with you, we want to lift your arms up and pour into you. We appreciate you and are praying for you. We are also looking forward to scribbling with you.
See you in October,
Chris Ball
We’re getting excited in Louisville…

We’re Chris Ball & Nevan Hooker…We’re getting excited in Louisville about Scribble.
Scribble isn’t about games and sleepovers. This is about big dreams that swirl with His spirit and find their way into our heart’s. You’ve experienced the moment when the idea that God has planted in you has flooded out of your heart and found it’s way onto a napkin or whiteboard as a scribble. The Scribble Sessions are birthed out of that moment. We believe that every great idea starts out as a scribble. At Scribble we have invited 8 leading ministry voices to share one important idea about youth ministry in 30 minutes. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity for youth ministers to be equipped and challenged.
Come scribble with us and your ministry may never be the same again.
